December 2022: Felicidad is Back!

Hey Little City friends!

I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend and got to spend some time relaxing with family and friends, good food and drink, and some great coffee. I personally had a little too much of all of the above, but in my book, that adds up to a perfect Thanksgiving. As we enter December, I wanted to give a quick update on what’s going on at the roastery, our featured coffees for the month, and what to expect in the coming year.

We’ve been really busy here at our Austin roastery, cranking out holiday orders and doing our best to keep everyone warm and caffeinated. We appreciate all the awesome support you showed during our Black Friday sale and encourage you to continue supporting specialty coffee this season and throughout the year by sharing the greatest gift of all with your friends, co-workers, and loved ones.

While our roasting and production teams are busy as ever, December represents a small break on our harvest and travel calendars. Southern hemisphere harvests in origins like Brazil and Peru have wrapped and are starting to ship and arrive in the U.S. as many of our northern hemisphere partners are starting to gear up for their spring harvest seasons. The next few months will take us to East Africa and Central America, visiting partners in Ethiopia, Kenya, Mexico, Guatemala, and other origins with the same goals always in mind—to learn as much as we can, to continue strengthening our partnerships, and of course to find some amazing coffees to bring home to Austin to share with you.

And speaking of amazing coffees, I present our featured coffees for December 2022:

Roaster’s Choice: Felicidad

This year’s Felicidad blend evokes warm and comforting winter flavors by combining two very different coffees. A clean and traditional fully-washed coffee provides the base, with classic notes of chocolate, caramel, and roasted nuts, while a natural from Brazil provides some unique and complementary highlights. The natural coffee underwent an extended anaerobic fermentation before drying, which contributed to its bold notes of ripe red fruits, red wine, and spiced rum. An intense coffee on its own, we use only a small percentage in Felicidad to achieve a crowd-pleasing blend that beautifully balances traditional and modern techniques and flavor profiles.

Featured Microlot: Kenya Chorongi

Operated by the Mutheka Coffee Farmers Society of Nyeri County, Chorongi Factory is the delivery point for about 1,000 of the society’s 5,600 smallholder members. Through excellent management of post-harvest processing, the mill consistently produces top-quality lots across all grades and screen sizes with coffees characterized by intense sweetness and complexity, bright citric acidity, and juicy berry and stone fruit notes. Check out my blog from last December to learn more about the meticulous processing techniques, quality control systems, and traceability measures that help make Kenyan coffee so consistently amazing.

Thanks for reading, enjoy your coffee, and I’ll see you in January!
